A solar charge controller sits between your PV panels and your battery bank. Its job is to regulate voltage and current so the battery charges safely—preventing overcharge, deep discharge, and reverse current at night. Without it, even a small 100W panel can permanently damage a battery in days.
PWM controllers act like a smart switch. They gradually reduce the current as the battery approaches full charge, holding the panel voltage close to the battery voltage. This is efficient only when panel voltage closely matches battery voltage (for example, a 12V panel charging a 12V battery).
An MPPT controller contains a DC-DC converter that continually finds the panel’s maximum power point and steps it down to whatever the battery needs. Modern MPPT units, like LDSOLAR’s Tracer Dream series, typically operate at 95%–99% conversion efficiency.
